WEST HAM BID FOR ‘NEW VIDIC’

West Ham United have made a bid in their quest to sign Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic who has been dubbed the new ‘NemanjaVidic’. Retired Serbian international NemanjaVidic is widely regarded as one of the best defenders to ever grace the Premier League and the Hammers would be hoping that Milenkovic can replicate a fraction of what NemanjaVidic achieved in the English top flight.

Italian publication Calciomercato reports that the Hammers have made a first offer for Fiorentinacentre back Milenkovicand that the bid made is far from the valuation of the Florence-based club for the player.West Ham United have offered €20m (£17.2m) for Milenkovic but it won’t be enough to sign the Serbian international.

West Ham United have prioritised the signing of a centre back as they seek to improve their defence ahead of the new season starting in August. The Hammers were the surprise package in the Premier Leaguelast season and were in contention for a Champions League spot ahead of the final games. In the end, the Hammers missed out on a place in Europe’s premier club competition next season largely due to the lack of strong defence.

The Hammers conceded 47 goals in the Premier League last season and ultimately missed out on Champions League football. Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester City, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur were all in contention for Champions League football into the final four games of the season. At the end of the final Premier League match last season, Liverpool and Chelsea bagged the final two Champions League spots in addition to the Manchester duo of Manchester United and Manchester City who had picked up the first two Champions League slots.

The other teams (Leicester City and West Ham United) that missed out on Champions League football qualified for the Europa League, while Spurs will compete in the maiden European Conference League.
